Title: THE ARTISANS
Author: Julie Reece
Pub. Date: May 12, 2015
Publisher: Month9Books
Pages: 300
They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old Raven Weathersby gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.
To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.
Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad’s drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.
But Raven’s stepdad’s drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she’s ever known out of jail, or worse.
Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries’ clothing line, signing over her creative rights.
Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can’t imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.
But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?
Praise for THE ARTISANS:
“The Artisans has all the elements I love – spooky intrigue, strong friendships, and a romantic tension to be savored.”  ~ Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author of the Sweet Evil Trilogy.
“Read The Artisans in the middle of the night with a flashlight if you dare. The perfect blend of romance and horror with a strong female lead kept me reading through the night.”~ L.S. Murphy author of PIXELATED Bloomsbury Spark and REAPER – J. Taylor Publishing
WHAT READER’S ARE SAYING:
“Wowza!!!! That book was so freakin’ good! Intense, insane, freaky at parts and sooooo good! I haven’t had emotions like this about a book in a long time!”~ Mindy Blogger @ Magical Urban Fantasy Reads
“The first thing I thought when I finished this book was ‘dang, I would love to see this as a movie’. The Artisans has such an awesome and haunting concept to it plus I just adore all of the characters.”~Jena Blogger @ Shortie Says
“The Artisans was a unique modern day retelling of Beauty and the Beast filled with mystery, romance and wonderful characters. From the first page I was completely lost in the wonderful setting that Reece created.”~Bridget Blogger @ Dark Faerie Tales

Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.
I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.
Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.
Then I thought I’d write one down…
Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances.
I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!

Title: THE PERILOUS JOURNEY OF THE NOT SO INNOCUOUS GIRL
Author: Leigh Statham
Pub. Date: March 17, 2015
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Pages: 297
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Lady Marguerite lives a life most 17th century French girls can only dream of: money, designer dresses, suitors and a secure future. Except she suspects she may be falling for her best friend Claude, a common smithie in the family’s steam forge.
When Claude leaves for New France in search of a better life, Marguerite decides to follow him and test her suspicions of love. But the trip proves more harrowing than she had anticipated, revealing secrets and testing her strength as well as her heart. Love, adventure and restitution await her in Canada, but only if she can survive the voyage.
WHAT READER’S ARE SAYING:
“The writing is solid and the world-building – that clever combination of historical detail and Ms. Statham’s imagination – is excellent.”~ The Australia Times Books
“I’d give more than five stars if I could. I’d recommend this to anyone who is a fan of young adult steampunk, girls who aren’t afraid to wield guns and wear pants in an age of dresses, adventure, and a dash of romance.” ~Bitches n Prose
“ I ADORED this story, and these characters, and I don’t want to give too much away. It is all worth stumbling across on your own! With a cover to drool over, fantastic characters, a simmering romance, awesome historical settings, and majorly cool steampunk elements, The Perilous Journey of the Not-So-Innocuous Girl (awesome title) easily captivated me, and now that it is over I want MORE!” ~ The Best Books Ever

“I’ve only recently discovered Steampunk, and every story that I read in this genre makes me love it even more. The Perilous Journey of the Not-So-Innocuous Girl was such an adventure! This book is rich in so many things and lacking absolutely nothing.”~ Pretty Little Pages

Leigh Statham was raised in the wilds of rural Idaho, but found her heart in New York City. She worked as a waitress, maid, artist, math teacher, nurse, web designer, art director, thirty-foot inflatable pig and mule wrangler before she settled down in the semi-quiet role of wife, mother and writer. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, four children, five chickens and two suspected serial killer cats. If the air is cool and the sun is just coming up over the horizon, you can find her running the streets of her small town, plotting her next novel with the sort of intensity that will one day get her hit by a car.

2016 – A great year for 16 debut novels (with one extra to grow on)

I am so looking forward to 2016, for it is this new year when my debut novel, IN THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON KING, will find its way into the world.

September 6 to be exact, so mark your calendars because it’s going to be an awesome day.  I’m already planning to take that day off from work. I’m going to celebrate. I’m going to have a party and maybe even a book signing. Don’t know. Haven’t gotten that far yet, but whatever happens, it’s going to be a glorious day. After so many years and what seems like hundreds of edits, my words will be in the hands of readers everywhere!!  Maybe, if I’m lucky, maybe it will be in a bookstore here and there. Squeeee!!!! Just the thought makes me all giddy.

What’s it about you ask? Well, I suppose now would be a good time to share a bit.  Unfortunately, I can’t release the cover yet but I can give you the official blurb.

In the Shadow of the Dragon King

Seventeen-year-old, Eric, is a kick-butt squire to the most revered knight in Fallhollow. Well he would be if Sir Trogsdill allowed him to do anything even remotely awesome. Determined to prove his worth, Eric sets out to find the mythical paladin summoned to protect the realm from the evil lurking nearby.

Sixteen-year-old, David, spends his days collecting school honors, winning archery tournaments, and trying not to fall in love with his scrappy best friend, Charlotte.

Right when things start to get interesting, he is whisked away to the magical realm of Fallhollow where everyone thinks he’s some sort of paladin destined to fulfill a two-hundred-year-old prophecy. He’s supposed to help kill a dragon with some sort of magic key. The same key that happens to adorn the neck of an annoying squire who’s too wrapped up in proving himself to be much help to anyone.

With egos as big as the dragon they need to destroy, Eric and David must get over themselves, or watch everything they know and love, burn.

Doesn’t it sound awesome!!!  Nod your head. Yes.  Yes it does. You will add it to your Goodreads list and purchase one or many copies (can you feel me using my Jedi mind-trick on you?)  Trust me. This is the book you’re looking for. 🙂

I also have some tips on some other books you’ll be looking for.  15 of them are debut novels and come out in 2016. One is the 2nd book of a series that has teens and young adult fans waiting with baited breath. Are you ready? Here they are in order of release:

Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbors.

Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the “nameless.” Hers is a suicide mission – Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery. But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe.

What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground nameless insurrection. Jenkins brings edge-of-your-seat adventure to this intriguing new world. I can’t wait to read more!”~ New York Times bestselling author Jessica Day George

Wow….WOW, WOW, WOW! I have no words to describe how much I love this book. Jenkins writes characters who are just so easy to love, and when you love a character it makes the book so much better. And I loved all the characters. Zo, Tess, Joshua and Gryphon. Gryphon is definitely my favorite – but who wouldn’t love Gryphon? Of course I do have a soft spot for our heroine, Zo.” ~Bri, Blogger @ Once Upon A Twilight

Nameless destroyed me in the best way possible. The romance was subtle, but written beautifully. The plot was very intriguing and the pacing was spot on. I loved the entire cast of characters, every single one of them added to the story. Trust me when I say you should preorder it, add it to your TBR, request it from your library, do whatever you have to do to get this book in your hands because if you are a YA fantasy fan like me you need this book in your life!” ~Bridget, Blogger @ Dark Faerie Tales

NAMELESS is epic storytelling at its best. My mind is still reeling from the world that I have just been immersed in and I don’t want to leave it. Can I please have the sequel NOW? Because I need to know what happens next but in the meantime I’m just going to re-read it again and again. Is it that good, you may ask? Hell yes!!! And you will think so too. Trust me.” Nancy, Blogger @ Tales of A Ravenous Reader

To say that I love this book is an understatement. It completely blew me away! I am so happy that I took a chance on it. NAMELESS is one book that you can re-read over and over again and it will still feel fresh! I cannot wait for the world to read it and fall under the NAMELESS spell. Because that’s what I feel like I am under, a spell that has me trapped in Zo’s world and won’t let me out! I don’t want out!“~Damaris, Blogger @ Good Choice Reading

Minotaur.v3

“Where shall I start?” asked Minotaur.

Ovid made an expansive gesture with both hands. “Where else but the beginning of course.”

Minotaur nodded his huge head. “Yes,” he said. “Yes,” his eyes already glazing over with the weight of thousand year old memories. And then he began.

So begins the story of Asterion, later known as Minotaur, the supposed half bull creature of Greek legend. Recorded by the famous Roman poet, Ovid, Asterion tells of his boyhood in Crete under the cruel hand of his stepfather Minos, his adventures with his friend, Theseus, and his growing love for the beautiful Phaedra. And of course what really happened in the labyrinth.

This is the true story of the Minotaur.

The best book boyfriend ever, according to Charlotte Stine.

Hi, hi. What’s up? My name is Charlotte Stine from the novel, IN THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON KING, and I’m guest hosting J. (Jenny) Keller Ford’s blog for the next month or so along with my bestie, David (you met him yesterday.) There is so much I could talk about, but David said I should do what he did, and start off by telling you a little bit about myself first, so here goes.

I was born in Havendale General Hospital on April 1 sixteen years ago. I am an April Fools Day baby, and the joke is no longer funny (yeah, Cory, you heard me).  My dad is a retired Air Force Colonel which means I won’t date for the next 30 years. My mom bakes the best chocolate chip cookies in the entire world, and my brother, Dan, was a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force before he went to Afghanistan. I won’t say anything more on the subject except this: I hate war and what it does to people. The whole idea of it sucks, and I think we, as the most intelligent species (that’s a highly debatable title in my opinion) on the planet needs to find a better way to get along. I mean, seriously. All this hate will put the world in a flame. Sheesh.

Anywho, I have a beagoodle (a poodle-beagle mutt) named Dixie, and this insane orange cat named Oscar. As for me, I’m just shy of 5’7″ and I have long brown hair that David says reminds him of melted milk chocolate, which is cool, as long as he doesn’t try to eat it. 🙂 I am a rhythmic gymnast and have won a few competitions, but I don’t do it for the trophies. I just love the sport. Hmm, what else. Oh, I’m a HUGE Taylor Swift and Adele fan, and Daemon is the best book boyfriend ever! Nom nom.

What do I want to be when I grow up? I don’t know. I used to think I wanted to be an attorney, but after everything David and I have been through, I’d be happy just being mommy and daddy’s little girl for a while longer. I can’t describe how much I miss them. I mean, as much as I hate my dad’s bark, I’d give anything to hear it right now. This place where David and I are right now is so messed up on so many levels. The food is awful, and the clothes are gross. I never thought I’d ever miss a pair of jeans and sneakers the way I do, so a word to all you complainers out there. Be thankful for what you’ve got, because the alternative is not always what you think it will be.

Now that I’ve told you a little about me, why not tell me a little about you? Do you have any questions, anything you want to know? Go ahead and ask because David and I don’t have a clue what you’re thinking, and it would be kind of dumb to guess.

So, until we meet again … Bye. *blows kisses*

Fun facts you wanted to know about David Heiland, savior of the universe (not!)

Hi everybody.  My name is David Heiland from the novel, IN THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON KING, and I’m here because Jenny, the person who wrote me into existence, asked me to be, though I haven’t quite figured out why. It’s not like I’m a rock star, but whatever. I have no clue what to talk about because I’m kind of a brooder, at least that’s what Charlotte calls me. Char’s my best friend, by the way, and she’s sitting here next to me, coaxing me to write stuff about myself. Bor-ing. She said to start with the stats cause everyone wants to know about those, so here are some tidbits about me that no one should be required to know.

I was born in Havendale, Tennessee, which might as well be Bristol for all it matters, cause I can literally walk twenty-five feet in my yard, and I’ll cross over the town line. Weird, you know, that the map line runs through my yard, but then again, I have a pretty big yard, as in acres upon acres of Cherokee National Forest big. But you know what would be even weirder? Living on the time zone line. Can you imagine? Clocks on one side of your house would read one time, and the clocks on the other side would read another. You’d walk through your own house and be like where am I? What a mind blow. You know what else would be crazy? Actually being able to travel through time. I mean, what if you didn’t just change time zones. What if you could actually step through time and change the things that effed up your life? Man, that kind of power would screw with your head.

But I kind of went off on a tangent there. Sorry. Charlotte’s nudging me to get back to the stats. Can you hear my eyes rolling?

So, stat facts. I’m sixteen. I’ve lived in Havendale all of my life, but I have a gazillion stamps in my passport. My godmother, Lily, insisted I see the world from the time I could walk, so twice a year, we go somewhere new. Next Christmas we’re supposed to go to Italy. I’m stoked, and if Charlotte behaves, we might take her with us, too. Yeah, you should hear her squeeling right now. Too funny. Anyway, I’m average in looks, nothing really to talk about. My hair is dark, like mud, and I have blue eyes. Char says they’re like someone captured the summer sky and then threw a prism into the mix. I think she’s nuts, but she’s a girl, so what do I know. Anyway, I’m pushing the 6’1″ mark. I’m on the Havendale High track team, and I’m a two-time state champion archer. Yep, I can shoot a tennis ball out of the sky, whoo hoo, not like that will ever land me a job or anything, but it’s kind of cool to say I can do it.

What do I do in my spare time? I like to play video games. Right now, I’m really into Borderlands, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag,  and Tera, but I still like playing stuff like Burnout and The Legend of Zelda.  Sometimes I fool around on my Taylor guitar, which I love. I also like to read, swim, water ski, that kind of stuff, but I haven’t had a chance to do any of those things lately because the alterer of my life decided to thrust me out of my comfort zone and into something I was totally unprepared for. I wish I could find a do over button, but I don’t think one exists, at least not in my present world.

One of Jenny’s friends, Deby, wanted to know what I see as my role in this crazy story that is now my life, and if that role interfered with my plans for my future. My role in THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON KING, Miss Deby, is beyond insane. It’s twisted and I would never wish it on anyone. I hate being in the spotlight, yet here I am, right in the middle of it. Did it interfere with my plans for the future? Excuse my language, but hell yeah. I mean, I didn’t have anything set in stone, but whenever I envisioned my future, there were no dragons involved. Ever. Now I have two of them, and some other mind-blowing stuff I can’t even begin to explain. What has happened to me and Charlotte has made me question everything I believed in, everything and everyone I trusted. I’ve had to do some things I never, in a million years, ever thought I would do. I’ve been forced to look at who and what I am, and I still can’t wrap my head around what I’ve become. I mean, it’s hard enough being sixteen, but to have all this other shit, sorry, crap, thrown at me in such a short amount of time? There was no time to prepare. No training. It was just do or die. And to make things worse, the story isn’t even over yet. Ugh.

On the good side, I’ve experienced some crazy and bizarre things I never dreamed existed. For example, I came face to face with a real, live centaur. I’m not kidding. It was crazy. And then I met this bad-ass knight who’s scary as shit and as big as a freaking tank, but is really cool, if you can get past being scared of him. This road trip we’ve been on has taught me a lot, but one thing I’ve learned the most is to never say never. It’s amazing what you can find if you just open your mind and your eyes.

And, on that note, I’m going to call it quits. Charlotte will be here tomorrow to dazzle you with her charm. We’ve decided to switch off every other day, that way, if you want to ask us questions, we’ll have time to answer. I hope I didn’t bore you too much with my ramblings.

Later.

It’s a Teen Invasion

It’s that time of year for me to take a hiatus from my blog to write, edit, and write some more. In the past, I just went silent but this summer, at least for a month, I am turning my blog over to two teens, David and Charlotte, from my soon to be released novel, IN THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON KING.

I have to tell you up front I have no idea what will spring forth from their fingers. I can tell you that David is quite nervous about it. He’s not one to voice his opinion. Charlotte, on the other hand, is quite vocal, but she promised me she would be nice, right Charlotte?

girl with thumbs up

They also said they would answer questions, too, and take ideas as they have no idea what to talk about.

Go figure … teens with nothing to talk about. Hmm. Is that even possible?  We shall see.

With that said, I will be here through the end of the week and beginning Monday, David Heiland will be on board to start off your week with whatever 16-year-old boys talk about. I hope you tune in now and then. It will be interesting.

THE ARTISANS, by Julie Reece – a review

5c392-the2bartisans

Author, Julie Reece, has done it again. What an incredible journey she has taken me in her latest masterpiece, THE ARTISANS.

The writing is mature, intoxicating, the storyline haunting, and let’s not forget the unforgettable characters. After reading Ms. Reece’s previous novel, CRUX, I didn’t think her writing could get any better. I was wrong. THE ARTISANS blew me away.

What did I love the most? So hard to say. I adored Raven. Her story is not an easy one. She’s seen her share of bad times. I felt so bad for her. I was so emotionally attached. I wanted her to find her piece of happiness so much I wanted to jump in the book and give it to her. It turns out I didn’t have to, which is a good thing, but still, I would have if I could have. I mean, if any book character deserved a happy ending, it’s Rae.

About Gideon Maddox , well, that boy had to grow on me, but he was/is the perfect, sexy counterpart for Raven.

Then there was Mags and Dane, true friends to the end. They have so got Raven’s back.

The setting in the book is eerie and creepy, ghastly spooky and dark. There’s romance, mystery, suspense. There are just so many wonderful elements about this story that it would take pages to write them all. I think the best thing I can say is BUY THIS BOOK!! 🙂 You will be completely blown away by this fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It is definitely one of my fave reads. And even though I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, I am soo buying a paperback version of this right now, today. That’s how much I love this book.

Ms. Reece, if you’re reading this, I love you!! Keep on writing novels like this and you’re going to bump the popular authors off the charts. I’m hooked on your writing. You’re one of my favorites for sure.

Five stars for this one, folks.

ABOUT THE ARTISANS:

Title: The Artisans

Publication date: May 12, 2015
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Julie Reece

ABOUT JULIE REECE:

3e195-julie_reece_image_3-253x300Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade.
