Book Review – Fire in the Woods by Jennifer M. Eaton

I rarely give a five-star rating to a book, but I couldn’t bring myself to give Fire in the Woods by Jennifer M. Eaton anything less. Before I give you my review, here’s a little bit about the book.

Title: Fire in the Woods

Publication date: September 2014

Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.

Author: Jennifer M. Eaton

When a plane crashes in the woods near Jess’s home, the boy of her dreams falls out of the sky—literally. But David’s not here to find a girlfriend. He’s from another planet, and if Jess can’t help him get back to his ship, he’ll be stuck on Earth with nothing to look forward to but the pointy end of a dissection scalpel.

But her father runs their house like an army barracks, and with an alien on the loose, Major Dad isn’t too keen on the idea of Jess going anywhere. Ever. So how the heck is she supposed to help the sweetest, strangest, and cutest guy she’s ever met?

Hiding him in her room probably isn’t the best idea. Especially since her Dad is in charge of the squadron searching for David. That doesn’t mean she won’t do it. It just means she can’t get caught.

Helping David get home while protecting her heart—that’s gonna be the hard part. After all, she can’t really fall for a guy who’s not exactly from here.

As they race through the woods with Major Dad and most of the U.S. military one breath behind them, Jess and David grow closer than either of them anticipated. But all is not what it seems. David has a genocide-sized secret, and one betrayal later, they are both in handcuffs as alien warships are positioning themselves around the globe. Time is ticking down to Armageddon, and Jess must think fast if she’s to save the boy she cares about without sacrificing Earth—and everyone on it.

Now, onto my Review. Make sure you read all the way to the end to enter a Giveaway and earn a chance to win a very special present.

My Review

Let me start out by saying I don’t read a lot of Science Fiction. in fact, I don’t read any science fiction, but I LOVE Sci Fi movies and t.v. shows like Star Trek, Star Wars, Independence Day and most recently on t.v., Extant. Why do I like them? Because there are these little guys running through the plots

So, I suppose it’s no wonder I really enjoyed Fire in the Woods because it also has aliens, but they don’t look like this little guy.

No, the one in particular in Fire in the Woods is a hottie. You know. Tall, dark hair, turquoise eyes and to top it off, he’s incredibly innocent which just makes him as charming as an alien can get.  It’s no wonder our heroine, Jess, falls head over heals for the dude, especially since he takes on the form of a teen idol heart-throb actor that is burned in her recent memories.

What did I love about this book?

First of all, the pacing.  It’s quick. I barely had time to recuperate from one scene before a new one started.  For a YA read, this is very important because teens tend to like quick-paced books. There is no let up from the beginning to the end. What a roller coaster ride.

Next, I really enjoyed the voice of the main character. Jess is a typical teen. One moment she’s strong and knows what she wants, the next she’s scared, unsure, but determined. Once she gets something in her head, she doesn’t let it go. She has to see it through no matter what the consequences, even if it ticks off her military-tough dad. All that is important is that she stands by her principles and does what she thinks is right.

Our alien, David, is scared. All he wanted to do was earn points in his own father’s eyes, and as the story progresses, the reader falls deeply in love with his character, his faults, and more importantly to do what is right by his people and Jess’.

Too bad there are grown ups involved – both alien and human – who think they know better than the kids, and get in the way, and almost destroy everything Jess and David have built.

The book touches on so many issues like parent/child relationships, interspecies relationships and following your conscience and what you know is right no matter what anyone else says, does or believes.

Beneath all the running and explosions and fire and possible world annihilation, there is a sweet little romance theme that will keep girls turning the pages.

What I didn’t like?

At times I wanted the book to slow down a bit so I could catch my breath. Sometimes I felt rushed to get to the end, but not enough to make me stop reading.

I wish there had been a bit more time to develop the relationship between David and Jess. It seemed too quick and easy that Jess fell in love with someone she didn’t know. She also seemed too accepting of the whole alien thing, but not enough that I couldn’t suspend belief.

I would have liked a bit more of a tease at the end, creating a desire to HAVE to read book 2. As it was, the storyline wrapped up quite well, but I didn’t get a sense of urgency that I HAD to return to find out what happened next. Of course, the snippet in the back of the book for Book 2 – Ashes in the Sky – solved that issue and has me salivating like Pavlov’s dog for more.

So, to sum it up, if you like YA, science fiction, action-packed adventure, and romance, you’re going to love Fire in the Woods. It’s an un-put-downable book that will have you thinking about its many messages for several days after you read it.

I was given an ARC of the book from Month9Books in exchange for an honest review. I also read this as a beta reader and thoroughly enjoyed watching this novel grow from infancy into the fantastic novel that it is.

Paper Wishes – How to get your heart’s desire the 21st century way

Ever wish upon a star only to have it not come true?  Well, listen up, friends, because the lovely and talented author,  Jennifer M. Eaton, is going to share a new trick that makes all of her characters’ most anticipated wishes come true.  Read all about it in her guest post below.  Maybe if you try it, your wishes will come true, too.  Give it a whirl.

***

Twinkle twinkle little star – How do you make a wish?

What do you wish for? More importantly, how do you make that wish?

Wishing is something that goes back into history, and so many people and cultures have tried and true methods of making their wishes become a reality.

Cultural diversification like this fascinates me.  After all, we are all people.  We all have hopes and dreams, but we come up with different ways of giving our dreams a little “boost” to make that dream come true.

While writing my book “Paper Wishes” I came up with a new idea for making a wish.  Well, it may not be completely new. I have not researched EVERYWHERE, but it’s a new idea to me.

I decided to have my characters write their wishes down on a sheet of paper, and fold them into origami stars.  Their wishes were then “locked” not to be opened for a set amount of time before being revealed to see if they came true.

Neat, huh? It’s kind of like a time capsule for wishes.

I really loved the idea, because so much can go wrong.  Your wish is sealed, so what if you forget what you wished for? What if you didn’t write down what you thought you wrote down? What if your wish contradicts someone else’s?

That’s the funny thing about wishes.  They always come true, even if it’s not quite the way that you intended the wish to play out.

What about you?  What’s your traditional or superstitious way of making a wish?

Jennifer M. Eaton’s new book PAPER WISHES is currently available from Astraea press.  Sit back and read a while–and dream about your own wishes coming true.

Paper Wishes: Jill has no idea what to write down for her wish, but when it looks like her best friend Jack is going to get exactly what he asks for, Jill makes a wish that will change both of their lives forever.   Click on the book cover to get your own copy of Paper Wishes.

Jack & Jill Volume 1 – A Review

jack-jill-volume-one-coverToday, I bring you Jennifer M. Eaton’s, Jack & Jill, Volume 1, a collection of two endearing, romantic short stories.

From the back cover:

Connect the Dots

Jill writes her most intimate Christmas wish to God—and throws it away for its ridiculousness, but Christmas wishes have a way of coming true, even when you don’t know what you’ve wished for.

A Test of Faith

One day after her Christmas wish comes true, Jill faces a wrenching choice that tests her deepest beliefs. Will love prevail over conviction, or is happiness nothing more than a fairytale?

***

When I first read these stories as a beta reader, I fell in love with them.  I love them still.  The characters are vibrant, well-crafted and endearing, especially Jill’s young daughter, Nikki.  They work well together, and the reader can’t help but fall in love with them and cheer them on.

The settings are well imagined and beautifully written, down to the snow on the ground and the corporate reports sitting empty on the computer screens.  The reader can’t help but feel Jill’s pain at the corporate Christmas Party in Connect the Dots, or experience and sympathize with her inner turmoil in A Test of Faith.

While the plot of both stories is all about Jack and Jill finding the ultimate romantic someone in their lives, the stories are character driven, not plot driven.  Jennifer Eaton takes us deep inside her character’s psyches, and she is unafraid to expose their weaknesses and self-doubt.  While these stories are not religious in nature, there is an underlying theme based on faith and the importance of listening to and following what is in one’s heart, not what is in one’s head.

These stories are sweet, romantic and will touch the soft side of everyone who reads them.  If you’re a softie and a sucker for sweet love stories like me, then this collection is perfect for you.  And….seeing that this is Volume 1, I can only assume there will be a Volume 2 in the near future?  I can’t wait to see what Ms. Eaton has in store for our romantic couple.  Maybe a wedding???  That would be delightful.

I urge you all to get a copy of Jack & Jill Volume 1.  You won’t regret it.  The stories are sure to warm you anytime of the year.

Jack & Jill is available from Amazon in the following formats:

Kindle

Do I read what I write? Umm… Huh? Do I have to answer that?

Today I have the lovely and energetic author, Jennifer M. Eaton, with me to promote CONNECT THE DOTS, her new short story released by Still Moments Publishing in their For the Love of Christmas anthology.

Jennifer is going to talk to us about reading what she writes.  Are you guys ready?  Take it away, Jennifer.

christmas pine and stars

Well hi-dee-hoo neighbors!  Good to see ya!

I’m here to selfishly promote my anthology “For the love of Christmas” offer some words of wisdom on a topic of Jenny Keller Ford’s choice.  I do this hoping you will buy my book out of the kindness of your heart, because Jenny told me to is such a good friend.

So… What is the topic?

Reading books in the genre that you write.

Ummm… Really?  Can’t I talk about something else?  No?  Ugh.  Okay… so here’s the scoop.

I know that everyone out there who calls themselves an expert tells you to read inside your genre.  Their reasons are totally sound:

  1. Get a feel for the market
  2. Make sure the story you want to write is not already written
  3. Learn from the style of others writing in your genre.

There may be other reasons, but since I’m going to debunk anyway, let’s just hit these three.

Let’s chat about these:

  1.  If I read books out right now, they were contracted at least a year ago.  So, let’s say vampires ar in… I write a vampire book.  So do 100,000 other people.  Publishers get tired of vampire books saturating the market and stop requesting them.  Now I’m skunked, right?  In my opinion, write what you want to write.  Write what makes you happy.  If it’s good, it will probably sell.  You are going to spend six months or more with these characters… why stress out about writing characters you don’t like for a market that might not be there when you’re done?
  2. Who the heck cares if the story is already written?  How many different versions of Red Riding Hood are out there?  Ideas are not copyrighted.  You can have the same idea as someone else. The trick is to put your own slant on it… and if I didn’t read a book like it (in the genre) I’d have to put my own slant on it, right?
  3. Now that’s just ridiculous.  You can pick up on anything from any genre and apply it to what you write in.  If you do it well, it will transcend genre.

Here’s the God’s honest truth:

  • Last Winter Red, in the Make Believe Anthology, is a Dystopian.  I don’t think I’ve ever read a dystopian, although I’ve seen movies.  In fact, I had no idea that is was Dystopian until someone told me.  Did not reading Dystopian hurt my story telling abilities?  Nope!  Seemed to work out fine for me!
  • Connect the Dots, in the “For the Love of Christmas” anthology, and its follow-up “A Test of Faith” coming out in January… they are both Contemporary Romances with heavy Christian influence.  Do I read Christian Romance.  Absolutely not! (Although there is nothing wrong with them) Romance as a whole is not my cup of tea, unless you mix some explosions in there.  I wanted to make my Romance “Connect the Dots” more interesting, so I decided to shove in a supernatural theme, and since it was Christmas, I went with God… Imagine me… putting God back in Christmas.  I’m such a rebel!  But that’s how this came about… I flexed a genre to make it interesting to me… and I didn’t have to read a bunch of stuff I didn’t like
  • Fire in the Woods is a contemporary YA Sci-Fi.  Nope, I don’t read it.  Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve even seen anything like this anywhere. Hmmmm.  That could be good, or bad.
  • Une Variente, which I am currently querying, is a Paranormal.  Now, I will admit that I have read a few Paranormal novels.  One of them was even a shape-shifter novel, like Une Variante.  I guess the only influence was that I thought “I can think up a better story than that” … and so I did.

What do I like to read?  Give me knights.  Give me Dragons.  Give me Elves.  Castles?  Oh Yeah!  Love it!

Why don’t I write it?  Well, I tried once, but since I read SO MUCH OF IT I could not come up with anything that I thought was original. The novel lays at the bottom of my closet, half-written.

See my dilemma?

No.  I will not start feverously reading inside the genres that I write.  The next book I pick up will be because it interests me… not because I need to do research.

And as for castles and dragons…. I’ll leave writing those to the people who do them best.

Do you read inside your genre?

christmas pine and stars

Thanks, Jennifer, and to answer your question, yes, I read inside the genre I write.  I also read outside the genre I write.  In fact, I read more in genre I don’t write than write in the genres I read.  Did that make sense?

What did you Make Believe as a child? Tell Vanessa and you may win an Amazon gift card

When you were little, what did you Make Believe?  Did you ever pretend to be anyone other than you?  Did you ever sing into a fork or a spoon in your bedroom and pretend you were a rock star?  Did you ever pretend to be married to your favorite actor/actress?  Did you ever play an air guitar?

This was one of the questions Vanessa Chapman asked of Jennifer M. Eaton, J.A. Belfield and me during an interview for the Make Believe blog tour.  You can find all the intimate details here.  And, if you leave an interesting/funny/sparkling comment on Vanessa’s post by 11pm (GMT) on Friday 28 December, you may just win an Amazon gift card.

Write a Story With Me – second time around

A while back I signed up over at Jennifer M. Eaton’s blog to write a story with her.  It was all in good fun and done to celebrate her blogiversary.  It’s been fascinating to watch the story unfold through the eyes of so many different writer’s.  Many times the story would take off in a direction that left the reader scratching his/her head.  Other times, the reader sat back and said, “Man, I wish I’d written that!”  Anyway, contribution time to the story has rolled around to me again (which I wasn’t expecting), so I’m adding the next chapter to this very unique story.  I hope you enjoy Part 20.

Yoran left the cloaked air rider hovering as he retrieved Marci’s limp body from the house.  Janosc was waiting in the sleep cabin when Yoran returned.

“Did you get the medicines I asked for?”

Yoran nodded while covering Marci with a blanket.  “Yes.  It’s all there.  Every last drop of it.  And the weapons, too.  Now let’s go.”  Yoran made his way forward to the cockpit.

“Not so fast, Yoran Sumner,” Janosc said.  “There is but one more item we need before we depart.”

“I refuse to get you anything else” Yoran said, his temper bubbling beneath his skin.

“Then your daughter shall die.”

Yoran advanced.  “Why you—”

Janosc thrust his arms before him, his palms facing Yoran.  A bubble of green light pulsed forward, buffering the space between him and the commander.  “Do not threaten me, human, or our deal is off.  Understood?”

Marci moaned in her sleep, uttering nonsense.

“Delirium is setting in,” Janosc said.  “We have little time.  The choice is yours.”

Yoran clenched his fists, but his anger was pointless. He had to save Marci.  He placed his hands on the overhead compartment.  “What do you want me to do?”

The bubble of light vanished.  Janosc flitted forward.  “I want you to go inside and get Bethany.  She’s coming with us.”

Yoran’s eyes widened.  “What?” he shouted.  “Why?”

“Because she is responsible for Marci’s illness, therefore she is necessary for her cure.”

“Responsible how? What are you talking about?”

“Why don’t you ask her?”

As I was the second in line to be tagged, I am offering up my contribution below.

She had to for if the Establishment discovered she’d snipped an olden leaf from the sacred Gleaming Tree, she’d be arrested, thrown into prison with the worst of criminals.  It wouldn’t matter she was only twelve years old.  The laws were clear.  Deface Argot’s most hallowed shrine and forfeit your life.

Marci bowed and whispered a thank you to the Gleaming Tree and fled down the hill, hurrying along the winding dirt road toward home.  She slowed her pace as she approached the outskirts of Argot.  The town bustled with the activity of ships porting in the harbor.  The Planetary Raiders had returned.  From the knoll of the bell tower in Logan Square, Marci looked out over the crowd, looking for her family. She spotted her pregnant mother and little sister waiting at Slip Three for the last of the flying armada to dock.  Excitement bubbled in her chest.  Daddy’s home!  She had to hurry.

Marci turned and scurried as fast as she could to the other side of town and plowed through the door of a small farmhouse.  She ran up the rickety steps to her room in the attic.

“Jenelle!  Jenelle!  I have it.  I brought the leaf like you asked.”

From a hole in the floor emerged a girl, no taller than a daisy, dressed in brown, her blonde hair cut short above her pointed ears.  She looked cautiously around.

“Did anyone see you?” Janelle asked.

Marci shook her head.  “No one, I promise.  I did exactly as you said.  Here.”  Marci opened the book and laid the wrapped leaf upon the floor.

Okay, so what are you waiting for?  Head on over to Jennifer’s site, sign up and participate in all the fun!
