#BorrowedMagic by Shari Lambert – $50 Book Blast Giveaway

Borrowed Magic

Borrowed Magic by Shari Lambert

After a three-year siege, Lord Kern, the dark mage, is dead. Magic has left Tredare, and life is almost back to normal.
For everyone except Maren, that is.

Before the siege, an attack by Lord Kern left Maren near death and with a sliver of magic buried deep inside her. Now, for reasons Maren doesn’t understand, that magic has been triggered, giving her the ability to “see” the truth: that her world is nothing more than a magical façade; and that the kingdom’s hero may not be a hero at all.

But this gift of sight comes at a high cost. Maren is in constant pain, and fears her own death is imminent. Plus, no one believes her suspicions that another Dark Mage has risen, and that Tredare may be in just as much danger as it was when Kern was alive.

With the country’s future in the hands of a man who’s vowed revenge on its king, Maren must convince someone else of the truth. Unfortunately, the only person powerful enough to help is also the one man she can’t trust; the man she almost married; the man who abandoned her and disappeared for three years: Kern’s son.

As Tredare crumbles around them, Maren must persuade him to help – before the king is murdered by the very hero he reveres; and before the same magic that gives Maren the gift of sight also takes her life.

Excerpt from Borrowed Magic

The siege had ended. Lord Kern, the dark mage, was dead.

Maren pushed her forehead against the warm glass, straining for a better view of the commotion below. A cheer went up from the crowd, and she searched for any sign of the man making his way to the castle. The man who’d saved the city – and the kingdom.

All she could see was a mass of bodies, crowding the path leading up from the city gates.

It wasn’t uncommon to see people in the streets of Delorme. They’d come every day for the past two and a half years, standing in subdued silence as they waited for the daily rations that grew more and more meager as the weeks went by. But today the crowd wasn’t silent. Today was different.

The tent cities beyond the wall, once teeming with soldiers draining the city of life, were now abandoned, destroyed, thin plumes of smoke the only movement. What was left of the lush, green fields sat charred and barren. Desolate.

“Anything?”

Maren jumped back from the window and felt the color rise to her cheeks.

“It’s all right, Maren,” Adare said, trying to get her own view of the street below. “We’re all curious. And you have more right than the rest of us. You knew him better than anyone.”

The dull, familiar ache in her chest forced Maren to hesitate until she was sure she could speak without her voice breaking. Even then, she couldn’t meet the queen’s eyes. “I’m not sure I knew him at all.”

Shari has always loved to read. “Bookworm” may even be an understatement. But when she discovered Georgette Heyer in high school, her love of reading exploded. Ms. Heyer’s books were not only entertaining, witty, and smart, but they saved Shari from the awkward, unromantic teenage years. To this day, Shari’s favorite books all have romance in them.

Although Shari spent a good deal of her time at Brigham Young University on the ballroom dance team, she did manage to get a BA in History and English before going on to get a Juris Doctorate. After graduation, she decided her first priority was to be a mom — a career she’s stuck with and loved.

In between cleaning, laundry, and homework, Shari writes. Just like with reading, she wants to get lost in a world, whether imaginary or historical.

She lives just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband and four children.

A handsome rock star boyfriend, a closet full of designer clothes, a limousine service at her beck and call, and a mansion in the hills of Los Angeles.

Even with all of that glamour and excitement at her fingertips, she still feels as if she’s been missing something in her life, so she decides to leave.

While trying her best to put her dysfunctional romantic relationship aside and tend to her beloved Granny, Sidney unexpectedly stumbles upon an intriguing emerald pendant boxed away in her grandmother’s closet.

Soon she learns it once belonged to her long-lost mother who committed suicide when she was just a baby. Suddenly feeling emotionally connected to the woman who had birthed her, Sidney begins to wear the necklace.

This sends her on a whirlwind journey that alternates between fantasy and reality…

Almost immediately, she starts having dreams linked to the mysterious pendant. As danger begins to seep into her life, Sidney refuses to remove the necklace and instead documents each dream to help her further understand them. Ready, Set … GO!!

I’m going to do something different and hopefully fun  beginning today, and judging on the response, may keep doing for several Wednesdays to come.

Have you ever wanted to help someone write a book? Maybe you are writing a book and you’ve reached spots you’re having difficulty writing, or maybe you need some help to make it better.  That’s where I am right now and I’m hoping you guys can help.  Aaand, when “Ready, Set … Go!” is over, keep your eyes peeled to my monthly newsletter ’cause I’ll be giving away something special to one awesome participant.

Ok, so here’s the deal-e-o.  I have a character in my YA epic fantasy, The Chronicles of Fallhollow trilogy, whose name is Eric. He’s an 18-year-old squire from another world. In the second installment of my trilogy, he’s been removed from his very medieval-esque environment and plunked down in the quaint, mountain town of Havendale, Tennessee.  He knows nothing of our ways here and things like refrigerators, cars and airplanes are mind-blowing.

As I’m reading through my manuscript, I’ve noticed I’m using a lot of the same ‘shock and awe’ words and it’s time to call out the big guns – you – my readers – to help strengthen the prose. To do that, I’m going to give you a scenario and I want you to describe it.  Remember, you know nothing of our world. This is the first time you’ve experienced any of this. Be Eric. Tell me what you’re thinking, what you’re hearing, etc. It can be funny, it can be serious, but in one or two lines or even a few words, describe it in the comments section below.

First scenario:   Firetruck racing off with its siren going.

Ready, set … Go!

Oh, and please share this with everyone!!  The more playing, the more fun this will be!!  And don’t forget to sign up for that monthly newsletter for your chance to win a very special prize for participating!!

BIO

Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.

I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.

Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.

Then I thought I’d write one down…

Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!

The Artisans

They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old RAVEN WEATHERSBY gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.

To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.

Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad’s drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.

But Raven’s stepdad’s drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she’s ever known out of jail, or worse.

Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries’ clothing line, signing over her creative rights.

Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can’t imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.

But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?

The Artisans is a delectably rich, layered and dark YA Southern Gothic inspired by Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s classic Beauty and the Beast.

The Artisans has all the elements I love – spooky intrigue, strong friendships, and a romantic tension to be savored.” ~ Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author of the Sweet Evil trilogy.

#YARomance, LOUDER THAN WORDS, is finally here!

I have been waiting so long for this Y.A. romance novel, #LouderThanWords, to come out!  I am so happy, I’m jumping around like a Mexican Jumping Bean.  And, to make the release even extra special for me, the author, the lovely Iris St. Clair, put together a special post for me and all of you.  I’m so thrilled for Iris I can’t contain myself! Squeeeee!!!.  Time to run around and go tell more people the great news. In the meantime, enjoy Iris’ post. I expect to hear a lot of singing going on, folks. Oh, and make sure you scroll down to the bottom to enter the #Giveaway!!

Louder Than Words Playlist

I can’t write to music, but I am inspired by it. When I’m driving, my music is playing and I’m often plotting (in addition to minding the road). Music helps set the mood for those mobile mullings. I asked fellow GMMG author, Heather Van Fleet, on Twitter the other day why playlists appeal to readers and I found her answer intriguing. She wrote: “I love playlists because it gives readers the mindset into what an author is feeling/thinking during writing.”

Here are a few songs from the Louder playlist and the why behind my choice. Usually a few lines of lyrics snag my attention. Sometimes it’s the timbre of the singer’s voice. Other times it’s the tempo or atmospheric quality of the song. So, dear readers, hop aboard the carnival ride that is my mind for a few minutes.

1.  Bad Day by Daniel Powter.

Louder Than Words opens with a cowering heroine, Ellen. She’s in the girls rooming hiding from a shocking, appalling, confusing experience. Throughout much of the book, there is this sense of this poor girl having one crappy day after another. At the risk of sending listeners shrieking from the room because this song’s been played to death, I still had to choose it. But because you already know Louder Than Words is a romance, you can trust that I’ll give you a happy ending. The lyrics may be about a bad day, but there’s a fun piano score to leave you with the promise that no matter your troubles, it’s really not you … it’s just a bad day.

2.  Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men

I chose this one because of the pessimistic / optimistic banter between the female and male lead singers. Their playful back and forth belied the serious content of the lyrics. It reminded me a lot of Ellen and Rex and their “little” talks with him pumping her up with his positive outlook.

Her:  I don’t like walking around this old and empty house

Him:  So hold my hand, I’ll walk with you, my dear

Her:  The stairs creak as I sleep, it’s keeping me awake

Him:  It’s the house telling you to close your eyes

(Lyrics by Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar Þórhallsson

3.  Blue Jeans by Lana Del Rey

I related two elements of this song to the Louder characters. The husky opening lines set a James Dean vibe. For you young’uns (myself included), James was one of the first “bad boys” of cinema. He’s also mentioned in the lyrics. Weaving in and out of this sultry yearning for a possibly unattainable boy is an ethereal chorus of “I will love you til the end of time.”

4.  Breathe In by Frou Frou

Okay, I picked this one mostly because I just love everything by Frou Frou and Imogen Heap (female vocalist of Frou Frou), but this song has always made me think of Ellen and her longing and patience for the day when she could finally win the one she loves.

And I’m high enough from all the waiting

To ride a wave on your inhaling

Cause I love you, no?

Can’t help but love you, no…

(Lyrics by Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth)

It’s got a nice jaunty sound with a strong bass line so there’s a little bit of a push pull between the lyrics and the music that hooked me. And how, exactly, do you ride a wave on someone’s inhaling? And how high would you need to be to do it? Food for thought, that. LOL

5.  If You’re Not The One by Daniel Bedingfield

This one I love because it’s a man trying to convince the object of his affections why they are right for each other despite her misgivings. He’s not going to give up on her. His persistence and absolute confidence that she is THE one for him, woos me like Rex did Ellen.

If you want to listen to the entirety of the Louder Than Words playlist, check it out on Spotify. The entire 56 minute list is comprised of:

  • Come With Me Now by the Kongos
  • Bad Day by Daniel Powter
  • Hurricane by MS MR
  • Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men
  • Hot N Cold by Katy Perry
  • My Life Would Suck Without You by Kelly Clarkson
  • Blue Jeans by Lana Del Rey
  • I’m With You by Avril Lavigne
  • Breathe In by Frou Frou
  • If You’re Not The One by Daniel Bedingfield
  • Message to My Girl by the Split Enz

ABOUT THE BOOK!

Louder Than Words
by Iris St. Clair

Release Date: 09/16/14
Swoon Romance

Summary from Goodreads:

Disappointment has been on speed dial in Ellen Grayson’s life lately. Her dad died, her mom numbs the grief with drugs and alcohol, and her so-called friends have slowly abandoned her.

Trusting a popular teacher with her troubles should have been safe and should NOT have led to an unwelcome seduction attempt that made her desperate to escape the final moments of Junior year. Lesson learned. Best to keep all the sordid details to herself and trust no one.

Enter Rex Jacobi, a cocky boy, recently transplanted from New York City and fellow summer camp employee. Though his quick wit and confidence draws her in, she can’t let him get too close. And summer is just long enough and hot enough to keep a boy like that at arm’s length.

But by the time Rex’s charm wears down her resistance, it’s too late. He’s put Ellen on the “just friends” shelf and has shifted his romantic attentions to the impossibly annoying and perky anti-Ellen. Even worse, the teacher who tried to get her to sleep with him is still at it, preying on other girls while Ellen struggles to come to terms with what happened.

With her ability to trust as shaky as a chastity vow on prom night, Ellen must decide if she has enough remaining courage to speak up about the well-liked teacher and risk retribution, tell Rex how she really feels about him and risk heartbreak, or hold all her secrets inside. After all, it’s the only safe place she knows when the only thing louder than words is the fear of being rejected.

About the Author

Iris bio

Iris St. Clair is the pen name for a long-suffering cubicle worker by day, a Walter Mitty-like dreamer by night. (Her alter ego Tatiana Ivanadance also choreographs gravity-defying routines in those fantasies, but that’s another bio.)

No matter what genre she writes, she prefers witty, insecure heroines and kind, persistent heroes able to break through to the gooey heart inside.

In high school she was voted most likely to win at Monopoly and Clue, but least likely to throw a ball anywhere near a target. Thank goodness writing requires less hand-eye coordination, punctuation errors notwithstanding.

Iris believes in the two-year “fish or cut bait” dating rule and has a 20+ year marriage and two teenaged sons as proof of concept. She lives, writes, dreams and dances in the rainy Portland, OR area.
