My Top 20 Favorite Reads of 2013

I surprised myself in 2013.  I only read 32 books last year.  I usually read twice that amount.  I’m a little disappointed I didn’t reach my goal of 50, but then again, I did do a lot of beta reads this past year, so in a way, I did read close to 50 books/novellas; I just can’t claim them yet.

Anyway, here are my top 20 not listed in any particular order.  Reviews will be popping up for each of them soon.

1.  Don’t know why it took me 8 years after its publication date to read it, but I’m glad I did.  I would have to say out of all the books I read this past year, it comes in at #1.

  2.  This is the second novel in a fantastic middle-grade series.  Received it as an ARC and completely fell in love with it.

3.  Talk about an emotional rollercoaster.  Ms. Ayres’ new book, 18 Truths arrives on  Jan. 28, 2014 and I can’t wait to read it in its final glory.

4.  Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare.  This is book 3 in the Infernal Devices series and it’s OMGosh stupendous.

5.  The Iron Traitor, by Julie Kagawa  #2 in The Iron Fey:  Call of the Forgotten series.  I’d love for Kagawa’s books to be made into a movie.  Then again, some things are best left to the imagination.

6.  Taken by Erin Bowman.  This book blew my mind.  Fan-freaking-tastic.

7.  Requiem by by Lauren Oliver.  Not as great as Delirium in my opinion, but still a great read.

8.  The Fall:  An Autobiography of an Alter Ego by Elle.  This book had my emotions all over the place.  It’s a dark book that deals with depressive topics, yet it is so completely filled with hope.

9.  Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi.  I didn’t think I’d like this one but I was so wrong.  The next in the series, Through the Ever Night is next on my TBR list.  Can’t wait to read it.

10.  Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger.  The first book in the series.  Love the fantasy element in this book and the plot is perfect for middle grade kids…especially girls.

11.  Jack & Jill Volume 1 by Jennifer Eaton.  Two lovely romantic stories that follow the lives of Jack and Jill’s Christmas romance.  These are quite endearing tales with beautiful HEA endings.

12.  Avenger, by Heather Burch.  Super fun, probably my favorite in the entire Halflings series.

13.  The Selection by Kiera Cass.  Described as The Hunger Games meets The Bachelor.  Whomever came up with that pretty much hit the nail on the head.  Loved it.

14.  After Dark by Emi Gayle.  Loved this beginning to the 19th Year series.  Filled with all kinds of fantasy goodies and a great storyline.

15.  Day After by Emi Gayle.  Second book in the 19thYear series and wow…I can’t wait to get my hands on book 3.

16.  Perry Road by Emi Gayle.  This is the first book in the Revolution series.  What do teenagers do when they find they are pawns for the new American Union?  Emotional and deeply involved plot.

17.  Eye of the Soul by Terri Rochenski.  Again, another fantastic fantasy story and I’m in love with the cover.  A perfect blend of good and evil.  Well thought out characters.  Stunning plot.

18.  Songs from the Phenomenal Nothing by Steven Luna.  I don’t know why I picked up this book but oh my, what a haunting, beautiful tale.  Talk about a tear-jerker.  Totally worth 5 stars.

19.  This is book 4 in the Heroes of Olympus series and was a fun, fast read.  It was charming, funny, and way too short.

20.  Sever by Lauren DeStefano (The Chemical Garden, #3).  I’m all over the place about this book and this series.  I wasn’t crazy about Fever but I had to see how this story wrapped up.  This definitely ends the storyline.  Like the ending of Mockingjay, it left me feeling numb, like there should have been more or something else, but it really was the only way to end it.

Night & Day Cover Reveal!

Back Cover

Something is wrong with Suze. His memory, his magic, even his muscles have all gone mental. If he’s not careful, the underworld’s version of the loony bin may be his next stop.

Not ready to give up the goat yet—if he had one he didn’t eat that is—Suze sets out to stop the mystical mayhem. Unfortunately, this isn’t a fairy tale, and Suze isn’t Snow White felled by an apple waiting for a kiss. Nor is he Prince Charming.

Nope, he’s just Suze. A destroyer demon stuck without the one person who probably kept him sane for the last eighteen years. Mackenzie Thorne. Or, maybe, just maybe, Mac made him insane, and what was once wrong is now right.

The only thing Suze is sure of—maybe—is that he needs to find the cure. However, with boy wonder memory-less and Mac in California, he’s not even sure where to start.

Of course, once he does figure it out, everything will fall into place like a well designed set of dominoes. Where the path leads, though, is a place Suze never would have expected.

Keywords: Dystopian
Paperback, EPUB, Kindle

Description

In 2132, “We the people …” means nothing, and it hasn’t for a hundred years.

Like all the citizens of the American Union, eighteen-year-old Erianna Keating is not to ask questions. She is not to believe anything except what the A.U. tells her. More importantly, she’s not supposed to know what she doesn’t know, nor that she’s a pawn.

Like everyone else, though, she is, and like everyone else, she is a hundred percent oblivious to what’s going on.

Or is she? Are they?

Erianna thinks going to Perry Road and joining the national registration program is her next step toward adulthood; the 2132 candidates for adult-classification, though, are in for a big surprise. Especially Erianna.

Thanks to Zane Warren, an awkward but hot guy who won’t shut up about a history that doesn’t—or shouldn’t—matter anymore, Erianna will know. Will learn. That includes finding out what actually happens after registration and doing something, anything, about it.

Fixing what went wrong, what caused the U.S.A. to split into two countries, though, is not on Erianna’s bucket list, but as she faces her future, she must decide whether to fall in line with the American Union’s plan for her, or to consider that Zane might not be wrong, and the time for revolution begins now.

About the Author

I had a really great bio in my head around midnight one night …. right before I fell asleep and it disappeared into the nothingness of unconsciousness. Bummer. So here’s something less well thought out.

I want to be young again, so I’m kinda sorta living it again. At least on paper. You see, I write paranormal romance. Now, that stuff can get really hot, and really gritty and well … mine does. But! My characters are teenagers, 18 and under. Like I was once … and want to be again.

Why would I want to be a teenager again? Geez. Because! If you met the man of your dreams at 14 was engaged to him at 19 and married him at 20, wouldn’t YOU want to do all that over again? Especially if you were still in love with him? I mean, c’mon! It’s love! That’s why I write, too.

You see… just because you pass a certain age doesn’t mean you forget what it was like to be 14, 15, etc. Actually, because I kinda grew up with my husband, we both still feel like the 14 and 17 year old kids we once were. So that’s where I’m coming from. You might think it’s totally lame, but you know what? That’s ok! Maybe you’ll like my other me instead. 😉

Excerpt

Which I could be. Don’t want to be. Really, really, really don’t, and staring at Cam in her new clothes without holes, her clean hair cut by a professional and the fact that she’s my friend reminds me why: Flukes are poor. I should know. My mom is one.

The animation keeps going as if it’s really trying for me—not that it can. I drop my P-Comm to my leg just as dark words appear on screen. My heart picks up speed, and a tingly tension takes over.

“Well?” Cam asks.

For some reason, I don’t want her to know. I want to find out by myself if I’m going to get a real life, or if I’m destined to wear hand-me-downs from twenty years ago until I’m ninety. I want to prepare, to plan, to cry if we don’t get to go together, or if I’m not like her.

I’m not, of course—in any way like her. Who am I kidding?

After what seems like hours, but is only seconds, I say, “Nothing.”

“Damn.” She throws her arms up in the air. “Figures. And it’s almost five. So, you know, I gotta go. Mom’s sure I’m going to be chosen to pop out babies, like she is, so she wants to make sure I know how to cook before the fake chefs get ahold of me to ‘teach’ me.” Cam gives me a dramatic eye roll and places a hand to her forehead. “Like, oh, my Oz, Eri, you know? We have people to cook for us for a reason. Duh! If I learn to cook, what job am I going to give someone like your mom, you know? And why would I get picked to be fat and ugly when I look like this?” She bats at her blonde curls.

Wanting to change the subject—to anything but the woes of Cam’s perfect life—I walk to her, give her a hug and a quick pat on the back. “I’ll … call you when I get it, ‘kay?”

“You better. We only have two days to shop for the perfect outfit. Why couldn’t your birthday be October twenty-ninth instead of December?” She snatches up her coat—preparation for the winter blast that will tear into uncovered skin. “And … you’re not a fluke. You will get in the white house, and when January first comes, we’ll be official!” She boogies her way out, hips wiggling. For someone who’s not happy about the prospect of becoming a baby factory, she’s awfully chipper.

I know it’s because she’s waiting to hear my fate. To prove I’m not a fluke. To validate my relevance as her friend—the one girl Cam can give backhanded compliments, and, for that matter, insults all day long, and still walk back in with a smile as if nothing happened.

Cam walks through the hallway and says goodbye to my mom who’s probably still working at her makeshift office in our miniature kitchen—trying, I assume, to avoid the whole days’ events. As much as Cam wants me to not be a fluke, my mom wants me to be one. If I’m like her, nothing will change. Like Cam, I’ll be the same old Erianna, just one day older and as useless as all the other flukes in the world.

The front door opens and closes, and I move to the window. Once Cam disappears from view, and only then, I turn over my P-Comm and touch the one message that sits inside.

The one that says: “Invitation for Erianna Price Keating.”

Meet Suze, the big, loveable demon guardian from Emi Gayle’s, DAY AFTER

Today, I have a very interesting guest with me.  It wasn’t easy getting this interview as he really doesn’t like to draw attention to himself (not).  Normally, I interview my victims guests in a public arena, but this particular interviewee asked I come to his place.  Want to know where that is?

Would you believe me if I told you a crypt?

Yep, I arrived a bit ago in the still blackness of night and was greeted outside the mausoleum by two goblin-like creatures.  They escorted me inside and down the grey steps to a room that could have come right out of an Austin Powers movie.  In the center of the room, perched on a Texas-sized blood-red beanbag chair, sits my host: a seven-foot, creature with green ears, and horns that stick out of his over-sized, orange-brown head.  He motions to me with his funky claw-hand thingy to take a seat on a large couch.  I do as he says because quite frankly, the dude is scary, even if he is wearing nothing more than a red and blue striped bathrobe that barely covers his behind.

I reach into my bag and pull out my pad and pen when, to my surprise, two teens stroll into the room.  I know right away who they are:  Mac and Winn.  Perfect.  All my pre-thought interview questions just got tossed out the window…well, not really since there isn’t a window, but if there was…

Oh, never mind.  I clear my throat. “Emm, thank you for granting me the opportunity to meet with you Suze.”

Winn and Mac sit next to me on the couch, one on each side.  My insides rattle like  a leaf on a tree but I keep my cool.  Suze simply nods and puts on a baseball cap backwards.

I can’t help but smile.  He looks ridiculous but I’m not going to say anything.

“So Suze, what’s your 411?  What’s your ish with Winn?”  I glance at the handsome guy to my right.  If I was his age, I’d be interested.  Just saying.

Suze makes some sort of noise that reminds me of a horse snort.  It’s enough to get my attention. “411?” he says.  “Whaszat?”  He scratches his head.  “Is that the number you call for emergencies? Does that mean you’re going to call me for emergencies? Me? Ooh!”  His eyes go wide.  “Can I be a paramedic and save people?”

“Um,” I chuckle and shake my head.  “I don’t think so.”

“So why’d you ask if I wanted to be one?”

“I didn’t ask.  I wanted to know what your relationship is with Winn.  I mean, are you guys best buds? Have you been friends long?”

“Buds? Well … if I had to pick any flower, I’d call him a rose because a rose of any other name would smell as sweet.”

I’m pretty sure I have a blank stare on my face.  Just keep going, Jenny.

“Let’s try a different question.  What’ is like being  a demon?”

“Demon!  Who’s a demon?  You?”

I laugh and point to myself.  “Me?  Oh, no, I’m not a demon, but I have it on good authority you are. Emi said so.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. So, what kind of demon are you?”

“Me? I’m Abbaddon.”

“Ah, a destroyer.  Sweet.”  My stomach just tied itself into a knot.  “Don’t get to see many of you around these parts.”

He shifts positions. “Parts is parts.”

I look away while he adjusts his robe.  “Yes, well, let’s talk about something else shall we.  What do you like to eat?  Being a demon you must like meat.  Do you care for fish?  Do you like your food raw and wriggly like Gollum.  Maybe with lots of garlic?

“Gollum? Oh, I don’t know about that. He’s scary. Ewww.”  Suze shivers.  I wonder if Gollum would be impressed.  “Vampires don’t like garlic, did you know that?” Suze says.  “They are the hardest to eat and give me heartburn.”  He rubs his chest up the middle.

Ah yes. Vampires.  I was wondering when we’d get to that.  It’s always about the vampires.  Time to change tactics again.  “So Suze, tell me about your pad, your crib, your crypt.”

A smile gleams across his basketball head.  “It’s soft. And I can … I can …”  He motions me forward and leans in.  “I can change up my whole crib with a snap of my finger. I have fun gettin’ it ready for Mac. She never knows what to expect. Like … what would you like it to be like? I can make it like that! But none of that modern art stuff.”

“Hmm, how about a cabin in the woods.”

Snap and voila folks.  I’ll be doggone if I’m not in a freaking cabin in the woods.  Not too bad.  Not to bad at all.  I sit back and get a little more comfy.

“What’s your favorite article of *clears throat* clothing?”

Suze taps his temple. The finger moves to his nose. To his chin and to his cheek.  “My Superman Underoos. Mac said they aren’t in fashion, but they’re comfy, so I like ‘em.”

TMI, Suze.  TMI.  Change direction again.  I look to my left at Mac who’s eyeing me with great interest. I don’t like it.  “So, Suze, you’re Mac’s protector.  How’d that happen?”

“I dunno exactly. Someone told me I was, and then Winn told me I was, and then I just was.”

“Hmm, interesting. How about you give my readers the scoop about what you and all your fantasy friends are all about.”

“Scoop? I like chocolate. And vanilla. And Mint. And chocolate. Did I say chocolate? Yeah, chocolate and mint. Mac likes chocolate too. Did you know Winn gave her a chocolate diamond and she didn’t even eat it?”

“Suze, can you try to focus for  a minute, please?  Who and what are all of you and why is Mac so important to you?”

He frowns and crosses his arms over his chest.  “Mac’s important ‘cause she’s Mac, but I’m not supposed to say why ‘cause she doesn’t want everyone to know.”

“Okay.  I can see that subject is off-limits.  Who’s your girlfriend?”

“She’s a Dhamphyr. She’s like a vampire-human-combo person and she’s gorgeous. I really like her. Do you think she likes me?”

“I have no idea.  I’ve never met her.  Do you floss?”

“Floss?”

“Yeah, you know, string between the teeth thing after you eat?”  He looks confused.  “Oh never mind. “What do you hate most about your ‘job’ as a guardian demon?  Like most?”

“My job? Well, I get to read a lot. My favorite book is the thesaurus and did you know there’s like a different word for every word in the dictionary in there!”

“You don’t say.”  I close my notepad as I can see this interview is going nowhere fast.  As I put my pen and pad away, I ask, “Is there anything interesting about yourself you want to tell us before I let you get back to your protecting and guarding?

“He flashes a big smile.  “I’m absorbing, charismatic, curious, delightful, magnetic, pleasing, striking, suspicious— you get me, right? I’m interesting!”

Yeah, I got you buddy.  I stand and grab my things.  “Thank you for taking time to talk to me, Suze.  It’s been…different.  Keep up the good work.”  I stop Winn and Mac with my hand.  “Please.  No need to get up. I can see my way out.”

I exit the mausoleum with laughter at my heels.  That’s okay.  I just exposed Suze to the world.  I wonder if he realizes the true scope of that.  Maybe it’s best for me if he never does.  He is, after all, an Abbaddon.

Blurb

Demon crypts. Vampire lairs. Glowing angels. Sexy sirens. The stuff of fiction.

Or so Winn Thomas always thought.

Since being accepted into the fold of the supernatural, he knows better. None of what he imagined is true, but everything he feared is, and binding himself to his Changeling girlfriend until her nineteenth birthday will give him an education far beyond what he’d get at his human high school.

Luckily, Winn’s not giving up, he won’t back down, and he definitely isn’t going to run away with his tail between his legs. After all, only werewolves have tails. Right?

In this, the second of the 19th Year trilogy, Winn’s facing the challenge of one lifetime. If he doesn’t learn the truth about mythological creatures, his girlfriend Mac Thorne won’t either. That means, in six months, when she chooses her final form, she won’t know what to pick.

Winn, though, has his own ideas about Mac’s final selection—plans she knows nothing of.

He intends to have her pick human.

Whether she can or not.

7 X 7 Link Blog Award

First, I want to thank Jennifer Eaton for this award.  She is an amazing author and I’m so glad she thought of me when handing out this award.  I have to say, I like my little collection accruing on my blog.  They’re so pretty.

As a recipient of the 7 x 7 blog award, I have to follow some rules, which are:

1.     Thank the person who gave the award (Thank you, Jennifer. *smile*)
2.     Write a post about it (I’m pretty sure that is what this is)
3.     Answer 7 questions about myself (boring, but ok)
4.     Link to 7 of your own post:  Most Surprisingly Successful, Most Underrated, Most Popular, Most Beautiful, Most Helpful, Most Controversial and Most Pride-Worthy
5.     Pass the award on to 7 bloggers who you think deserve it

Okay…so here are seven facts about me:

1.  I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard 101. I have level 60 or above Life, Ice and Fire Wizards and I also play my son’s Death, Myth, and Storm characters.

2.  I never met a lobster I didn’t like.

3.  I love to travel and want to see the Grand Canyon, Alaska, Vermont in the fall, Hawaii, Scotland, Ireland and Italy before I die.

4.  I love dogs and cats and would take every stray that I could if I had the space and money.

5.  My favorite color is yellow.

6. My favorite flower is a yellow rose.

7. I cry at movies, even happy ones.

Now, for the most difficult of all of the rules to follow: Number 4.  I seem to write a lot, but not many people comment or follow back, so it’s sort of difficult to tell which of my previous blogs fit into the categories.  So, I guessed at some, and then looked at WordPress stats for the rest.  The following is what I came up with:

Most surprisingly successful:

Can You Guess My Character’s  Age:

 Most under-rated:

Past vs. Passed

Most popular:

Brenda Drakes’ Can You Leave Me Breathless Contest

Most Beautiful:

I Love Living in Florida!

Most Helpful:

Passive Writing and How it Can Kill a Story

Most Controversial:
