Today, I’m participating in Julia’s Place 100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups. The prompt today is:
“…I’m exhausted. Shut the door behind you…”
Here’s my attempt. Hope you enjoy.
In the Arms of an Angel
A young man appeared in the threshold of my hospital room. I knew him right away, though I’d never seen his face. Angels, even ones of death, have wonderful auras about them. I clasped my frail hands to my chest and shed a tear of joy.
“You came,” I said. “You heard my prayers.”
“Yes, Molly.” His voice was light as air, sweet as honeysuckle on a vine. There was such tenderness in his eyes.
“Good,” I said. “I’m exhausted. Shut the door behind you, please.”
He held me as the door breathed closed. The light faded. Death is beautiful in the arms of an angel.

especially liked ‘voice was light as air, sweet as honeysuckle on a vine’ and ‘the door breathed closed’ – very angelic. Dont think you needed to mention death at all, just allude to it and let the reader come to realize. Not sure that she’d order an angel, but then she is old and probably doesn’t care!

Thank you for your insightful comments. I didn’t see her as ‘ordering'(that comment tickled me) an angel…just praying for one. I’ll see how I can re-work the ‘death’ thing as I see your point.

She told one of God’s own to close the door! I’m not religious, but that did seem a bit cheeky. Perhaps he’ll forgive her, she does sound 102.
