Row 80 Check-in – December 11, 2011 – Busy Busy Busy

This has been a very, very busy writing week.  Finally, after two weeks, I finished the re-write of Chapter 12 of my novel, In the Shadow of the Dragon King, which left me all giggles and smiles.  This chapter re-write was difficult for me as I just couldn’t get it right.  I wasn’t happy with anything wrote.  I’m surprised I have any hair left.  Of course, the changes led me to have to make other changes in my manuscript but I’m hoping those will be easier fixes than this edit.

I popped over to Brenda Drake’s website and entered a contest: Can We Guess Your Character’s Age?  It was great fun to read all the entries and guess the ages of the main characters.

I posted a review of Henry Neff’s, The Fiend and the Forge on my blog.  You can only imagine the squeals of delight that ushered forth from my mouth when I received a direct blog response from the author himself.  Wow!  I was on cloud nine for a couple of hours.  This guy is a sweetheart and gracious.  All of you should check out his Tapestry series, especially if you have middle graders in your home.  I love his website and there are some great interactive games for the kiddies (and grown up kiddies, too).

I got half-way through a short story I was writing for an anthology, hated it, scrapped it and started a new one this morning.  Hopefully I can finish it before the 12/31 deadline.

I started a trivia contest on my blog that is going on from Dec. 9 through the 15.  The winner will get to choose one of three Kindle books:  The Hunger Games (in honor of the soon-to-be-released movie), Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (very good book), and The Iron Knight (LOVED this book and will need to do a review soon).  The answers to the questions can be found on Google and Goodreads.  You should pop over, sign up and play!

We bought a mammoth 11-foot Christmas tree like we always do (thanks to a very dear friend of mine), and today is decorating day.  The lights on the house went up last weekend.  My three doggies and two kitties have been checking out the live tree in my living room.  I’m sure they are trying to figure out if they should climb it (cats) or pee on it (dogs.)

Hubby and I will fix the leak in the bathroom toilet.  I hate it when those flapper things don’t work anymore and your toilet just runs or doesn’t fill up.

Goals for this coming week:  getting the house in shape for my daughter coming home from college.  She lives in Winston-Salem, NC and is going for her Masters in Costume Design and Theater.

I am pushing forward on my rewrite of my  novel and have also written some more on my second and third novels as the mood hits and the words come. Going to do more blog hopping and commenting.  I’ve met some really great writers this past week.  It’s all been great fun.

What have you guys been up to?

  1. Good week’s work! I can’t wait for that movie (Hunger Games), but I’m nervous about it too. Hope you have fun with your daughter next week.

  2. I’d call that a productive week. Great job!

I’m glad you were able to work out your chapter issues. That is pain we all share from time to time and such a relief to get passed it. I hadn’t heard of the Tapestry series but with one daughter in the “middle” range I’ll be sure to check it out. Thanks for the tip.

Have a great coming week, Jenny 🙂

  3. Congrats on getting so much done, and for knowing when your story wasn’t working – and restarting it! That’s one of the hardest judgement calls we writers sometimes have to make. I finally picked a weekly goal that was challenging, yet doable. Good luck with your goals this week!
